Mohamed Salah is about to sign a new 2-year contract with Liverpool to end all doubts about his future at Anfield.
A deal between Liverpool's owner fenway Sports Group (FSG) and the 32-year-old striker has been reached after months of negotiations. Salah's agent, Rammy Abbas, told the Kop's board that they wanted a 3-year contract. Previously, the "Red Brigade" was said to only want to keep Salah for another year after his current contract expired.
While the tension continues, Salah has publicly declared that this will be his last season with the Anfield team. Liverpool fans expressed concern and protested to put pressure on The Kop's leadership.
Finance is not necessarily a problem leading to Salah's delay in his contract extension. In fact, the Egyptian has been Liverpool's top earner with more than £400,000 a week.
Instead, the contract term is a controversial issue. FSG do not want to offer long-term contracts to players over the age of 30. This is also the reason why Virgil van Dijk, 33 years old, has not been able to extend his contract with Liverpool.
There is no sign that Salah's influence will weaken at Anfield. He is still the top scorer in the Premier League.
In Liverpool's 3-3 draw with Newcastle, Salah set a record for scoring and assisting in 37 different league games. This achievement broke Wayne Rooney's previous record of 36 matches.
Unless there is any problem at the last minute, Salah will sign a new 2-year contract. This will also be good news for coach Arne Slot when he realizes how much Liverpool need Salah.
On the contrary, this will be a heavy blow to the Saudi Pro League. A series of teams in this tournament have planned to recruit the Egyptian star for many years. Last summer, Liverpool rejected a £150m offer from Al-Ittihad for Salah.
The Egyptian is still Liverpool's number 1 star. He has scored 13 goals and provided 8 assists in just 14 Premier League games this season. In total, Salah has scored 226 goals in 370 appearances for The Kop.
In addition to Salah, Liverpool are also trying to sign new contracts with Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Both of their contracts will expire at the end of this season. In particular, Alexander-Arnold is receiving attention from Real Madrid.
