Michael Carrick strongly purges Man United squad

Michael Carrick is accelerating the process of rebuilding Man United when he is ready to part ways with many young players to streamline the squad.

Coach Michael Carrick is ready to part ways with a group of young Manchester United players this summer as part of a squad restructuring plan.

After being officially appointed as head coach, Carrick is gradually shaping the force for the new season and does not hesitate to let some products of the academy leave Old Trafford.

Man United's pre-season tour saw many young players leave their mark. Shea Lacey, Jack Fletcher and JJ Gabriel all impressed in the 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid.

Because many key players returned late after the 2026 World Cup, Carrick took the opportunity to evaluate young talents. However, not every player met the requirements of the English strategist.

In this summer transfer window, the "Red Devils" have parted ways with Andre Onana (bought to Trabzonspor), Rasmus Hojlund (Napoli, £43.2 million), Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho after their contracts expired, along with Tyler Fredricson (bought to Lausanne Sports). However, the Old Trafford team still needs to continue to purify the force to release the salary fund and make room for new players.

According to British media, in addition to prioritizing finding new destinations for Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee, Man United has also announced to 7 other players that they are no longer in the plan.

Names on the list include Ethan Wheatley, Toby Collyer, Dan Gore, Radek Vitek and Harry Amass. Meanwhile, Jacob Devaney and Chido Obi also face uncertain futures.

Striker Ethan Wheatley, an England U20 international, was once loaned to Walsall, Northampton and Bradford. Everton is interested in the 20-year-old player, but the plan to use him in the U21 team is considered not attractive to Wheatley.

Toby Collyer, who used to play for West Brom and Hull City on loan, has been removed from the squad for the match against Atletico Madrid and has been informed that he may find a new destination himself.

Dan Gore, 21 years old, spent the previous season on loan at Rotherham and has only made two appearances for Man United. With his contract only one year left, the possibility of him leaving is almost inevitable.

In the goalkeeper position, Radek Vitek impressed during his time playing for Bristol City on loan and is currently receiving attention from many teams. Along with Altay Bayindir, the 22-year-old goalkeeper has been included in the transfer list, after Man United signed Karl Darlow as a backup option for Senne Lammens.

Harry Amass has returned to training with the first team after playing for Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich on loan. The 19-year-old defender is used as a backup option for Luke Shaw in friendly matches, but can still leave Old Trafford if Man United signs another left-back. Lewis Hall of Newcastle is the top target, while Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander is also on the watch list.

In the opposite direction, midfielder Jacob Devaney is likely to continue to be loaned after playing for St Mirren.

Meanwhile, striker Chido Obi has not yet made a mark since moving from Arsenal in 2024. He is also facing the risk of having to find a new destination if he wants to have more playing opportunities.
