Overview
Coventry City and Aston Villa are both starting the season not as expected in the Premier League, making the confrontation in round 3 of the Carabao Cup an opportunity for the two teams to regain the feeling of victory.
Coventry has gone through a long journey to return to the highest league in England after many years of absence. Last season, coach Frank Lampard's team won the Championship and returned to the Premier League with high expectations.
However, the joy was quickly replaced by disappointment. Coventry has not won any points after the first rounds and has not even scored, while having conceded 10 goals.
The defeat to Brighton last week made the situation even more difficult. Taiwo Awoniyi received a red card, forcing Coventry to play with 10 men for most of the second half. This result caused them to lose all 4 opening matches of the season for the first time since 1919.
Carabao Cup is the only arena that has brought joy to Coventry since the beginning of the season. Awoniyi scored the opening goal in the 4-2 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the second round, thereby bringing this team to the 3rd round and preparing to face Aston Villa.
This is also the first time Coventry and Aston Villa have met in the Carabao Cup. The last time the two teams met in a knockout match was about 28 years ago, when Villa won 1-0 against Coventry in the 5th round of the FA Cup.
Aston Villa also did not have a better start in the Premier League. After ending their thirst for major titles with the Europa League title last season, coach Unai Emery's team went through a volatile transfer window and only won 1 point after the first rounds.
Villa just suffered a 1-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest. After winning 3-2 against Club Brugge in the Champions League, the Birmingham team disappointed when Igor Jesus scored the decisive goal at Villa Park.
Alysson once brought Aston Villa back to the game with an equalizer, but the home team could not preserve the result and had to accept defeat. Now, Villa is on a guest trip to Coventry with the goal of winning a ticket to the 4th round of the Carabao Cup for the second time in six seasons.
Although Aston Villa has achieved many significant achievements in European tournaments under Emery and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 2025, their journey in the Carabao Cup in recent seasons has not been really favorable.
The confrontation with Coventry will become an opportunity for Villa to regain victory, and at the same time help Emery have more time to stabilize the team after a slow start.
For Coventry, the Carabao Cup is also a place where they can temporarily forget the difficulties in the Premier League and look for a positive result.
