Overview
Inter Milan officially won Serie A 2025-2026 after a 2-0 victory over Parma last weekend, thereby leaving Napoli 12 points behind when the season is only three rounds away. However, Cristian Chivu's team still does not want to stop, because Nerazzurri are aiming for a historic domestic double.
The blue and black striped team is currently preparing to enter a decisive stage with two consecutive encounters with Lazio at the Olimpico stadium, including the Coppa Italia final next week. If they defeat the capital representative to lift the trophy, Inter will recreate the miracle of winning a domestic double for the first time since the legendary treble season under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
Notably, Cristian Chivu was once a member of the Inter squad that won the Champions League that year. And now, this strategist is facing the opportunity to write history right in his first season leading the team.
Inter entered the match with extremely impressive form. Their most recent defeat took place more than two months ago in the derby against AC Milan. Since then, Nerazzurri has maintained a stable series of matches and continuously exploded in attack.
The Milan team has scored 82 goals in Serie A this season - one more than the entire previous season, and is fully capable of breaking the club's record of 90 goals in a season. Inter has also scored at least 2 goals in the last 6 consecutive matches.
Head-to-head record is also completely in favor of the new champion. Inter has won both of their last two away matches against Lazio with a total score of 8-0, and Lazio has never defeated Nerazzurri in Serie A since August 2022.
However, Lazio is no longer an easy team to beat as in the early season. After a period of decline, Maurizio Sarri's army is strongly reviving in the late season.
The capital team has only lost one of their last 10 matches in Serie A and just had a dramatic victory over Cremonese thanks to a late goal. Before that, they also created an emotional 3-3 draw with Udinese.
Despite being 4 points behind the European Cup group, Lazio has not given up hope of entering the top 7. However, their most realistic opportunity is probably in the Coppa Italia, where the championship not only helps them save the season but also brings home a ticket to the Europa League.
Personnel situation
After officially winning Serie A, Inter Milan is likely to rotate the squad in the away match against Lazio to save energy for the upcoming Coppa Italia final. Chivu currently has quite a few personnel options and is not under too much pressure about the results in the domestic league.
Inter is only missing Hakan Calhanoglu due to a thigh injury, while Pio Esposito's ability to play is still uncertain due to a minor back problem.
In the opposite direction, Lazio does not have a truly explosive striker this season. Gustav Isaksen is currently the top scorer for the capital team but has only scored five goals in Serie A.
Right behind him is veteran Pedro with 4 goals. The Spanish player once made Inter suffer in the previous season when he scored an important double that affected Inter's championship race.
Expected lineup:
Motta, Marusic, Romagnoli, Provstgaard, Tavares, Basic, Patric, Taylor, Isaksen, Noslin, Zaccagni.
J. Martinez, Bisseck, Acerbi, Augusto, Dumfries, Frattesi, Zielinski, Sucic, Dimarco, Thuram, L. Martinez.
The match between Lazio and Inter Milan takes place at 11:00 PM on May 9th (Vietnam time).
