On the afternoon of December 28, Canadian media simultaneously reported that Mr. John Herdman would become the new coach of the Indonesian national team. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has not confirmed this information. However, at the meeting of the PSSI Executive Committee on December 18, all members agreed that John Herdman would be the new coach of the Indonesian national team.
John Herdman, 50 years old, used to coach the Canadian national team to the 2022 World Cup. It is expected that he will replace Patrick Kluivert to coach the Indonesian national team, and also concurrently work for the U23 team of this country, in order to narrow the gap between young player development and the national team.
The initial contract between him and PSSI will last 2 years and optionally extend until 2030. It is known that the salary that John Herdman receives from PSSI is about 40,000 USD/month.
Although Herdman became one of the highest-paid coaches in Southeast Asia, his salary was still lower than previous records.
According to sources, former Indonesian national team coach Shin Tae-yong earns 1.5 million USD/year from PSSI, equivalent to over 120,000 USD/month.
Kluivert's contract is worth about 100,000 USD/month, while the former head coach of the Vietnamese national team, Park Hang-seo, earned about 50,000 USD/month.
In case of leading the Indonesian national team, Mr. John Herdman will start preparing for ASEAN Cup 2026 and further for Asian Cup 2027. After that, the team will prepare for the 2030 World Cup qualifiers. After failing in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Indonesian national team is determined to win a ticket to the 2030 World Cup.
