In the 32nd minute of the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final between Vietnam and Thailand, striker Nguyen Xuan Son was injured and had to leave the field on a stretcher.
He was quickly taken to the hospital by ambulance, with staff from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) following closely to support. Xuan Son's wife was also present at the hospital and updated him on the match situation via phone.
It is known that striker number 12 has a broken leg, both of Xuan Son's shin bones are damaged. VFF and the medical team of the organizing committee are consulting on whether to perform surgery immediately in Thailand or return to Vietnam to perform it later.
After the emergency treatment, Xuan Son regained consciousness and continued to watch his teammates compete. After more than 90 tense minutes, the Vietnamese team won 3-2 (5-3 on aggregate), officially becoming the champion of the 2024 ASEAN Cup.
This achievement bears the strong mark of striker Xuan Son, when after 5 matches he scored 7 goals and 2 assists. At the end of the tournament, the striker born in 1997 received a double of individual awards as the top scorer and best player of the tournament. Because he was absent, his two teammates Quang Hai and Duy Manh represented him to receive the award.
