The AFF has approved the AFF's proposal to select the host country for the 2020 AFF Cup. Accordingly, Singapore has overcome Thailand to become the host of the largest tournament in the region.
At the previous AFF Competition Board meeting, representatives of the Football Federation of Thailand and Singapore presented in great detail their own strengths in competing for the right to host the AFF Cup 2020 and all received high appreciation from the members of the AFF Competition Board.
Based on the 6 criteria set for the host country of the AFF Cup 2020, including: Government support; Health and safety; Risk ratio leading to cancellation; Rights of commercial partners; Facilities and experience in organizing international football events, the AFF Competition Committee discussed and collected votes from members.
As a result, with the advantage of being one of the leading countries in effectively controlling the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic and preparing for the period of reopening the economy, Singapore has received more supportive opinions than Thailand.
VFF Vice President Tran Quoc Tuan said that in order to decide to select Singapore as host of the AFF Cup 2020, in addition to the factor of facilities for organization, the AFF Council paid special attention to and carefully considered the situation of the COVID-19 epidemic, the rate of people vaccinated and the effectiveness of COVID-19 prevention in the candidate country.
This is very important because the tournament takes place over a period of 1 month with the participation of 10 teams, supervisors, referees and commercial partners of AFF, so it is necessary to ensure the highest safety of health for participants as well as minimize the risk of the tournament being delayed or canceled due to the impact of the epidemic.
Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan also said that after determining the location for the AFF Cup 2020 in Singapore, VFF will immediately connect with the Singapore Football Federation to carry out the necessary preparations to ensure the most favorable conditions for the Vietnam team, aiming to defend the championship.
Mr. Tuan hopes that when the AFF Cup 2020 takes place, the epidemic will be well controlled, thereby creating conditions for Vietnamese fans to go to Singapore to cheer on coach Park Hang-seo and his team.
The 2020 AFF Cup will take place at 3 stadiums in Singapore: National, Bishan and Jalan Besar. Among these, Jalan Besar Stadium is an artificial turf surface. The Vietnam team is in Group B, not in the same group as the host team Singapore and will likely play on artificial turf in the final match.
