According to Dr Sheetal Radia, Ph.D. surgeon of the ENT and neck, Wockhardt Hospital (India), lack of sleep not only affects mental and physical health but can also cause some respiratory problems, including nasal congestion.
Lack of sleep weakens the immune system
When there is a lack of sleep, the immune system becomes weakened, making it impossible for the body to fight infections and allergens effectively. During deep sleep, the immune system releases proteins that help the body fight inflammation.
Lack of sleep disrupts this process, leading to reactions such as sneezing and nasal congestion when exposed to allergens.
Lack of sleep causes rhinitis
Lack of sleep can increase inflammation in the nasal passages, making the nose more susceptible to irritation and congestion. Unbalanced production of nasal congestion can also lead to nasal congestion or runny nose.
Sleep apnea causes nasal congestion
Sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing is interrupted during sleep, can contribute to nasal congestion. When the airway is blocked, you have to breathe through your mouth, leading to dry nose and a feeling of discomfort when waking up.
Lack of sleep increases stress
Lack of sleep increases the level of stress in the body, which can aggravate nasal congestion. Prolonged stress can cause inflammation and increase symptoms such as sneezing and nasal congestion.
How to reduce nasal congestion and sneezing
If you experience nasal congestion and continuous snoring, here are some tips to help improve your condition, says Dr Sheetal Radia:
Get enough sleep: Try to sleep 7-9 hours a night continuously to keep your immune system functioning effectively and reduce inflammation.
Maintain a clean environment: Regularly clean the living space to remove allergens.
Use an air purifier: An air purifier helps remove dust and pollutants from the air.
Stay hydrated: Drinking water helps keep your nasal passages moist, reducing nasal congestion.
Wash your nose: Use a nasal spray bottle with salt water to moisturize your nasal cavity and reduce nasal congestion.
Avoid allergens: Identify and avoid allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.
Steam in: Inhale water from a bowl of hot water or use a humidifier to help soothe your nasal passages.
Raise your head while sleeping: Using additional pillows or raising your bed sheets makes it easier for your nose to drain.
