Expect many new points
The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced a draft Circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Regulations on admission to university and college levels in Preschool Education.
In particular, the ministry plans to set early admission quotas for training institutions, but not exceeding 20% of the quotas for each major and group of majors. This new point is causing mixed opinions from universities, candidates, and parents.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), many people confuse the concept of early admission and admission methods. Ms. Thuy emphasized that early admission is used to differentiate in terms of time from the admission round according to the general plan of the Ministry of Education and Training. Meanwhile, admission methods are used in any admission round.
There is no such method as “early admission method” because schools can use admission methods in all admission rounds. However, in terms of time, early admission is before the high school graduation exam, so at that time it is not possible to use the admission method based on high school graduation exam scores.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, candidates do not need to worry, whether in the early admission stage or the admission stage according to the general plan of the Ministry of Education and Training, candidates can still participate in the admission process using different admission methods that they have prepared for.
Ms. Thuy informed that the new points of the draft are also related to adjusting the threshold to ensure input quality for the groups of pedagogical and health majors; the review scores and admission scores of the methods and subject combinations used for admission must be converted to a common scale; admission based on academic records must be based on the results of the entire 12th grade year of the candidate...
Review quickly
Do Dinh Tuan Dat - a 12th grade student at M.V. Lomonosov Secondary and High School (Hanoi) - realized that it would be extremely difficult to compete only with high school graduation exam scores to get into university. Therefore, since grade 11, he has decided to use additional test scores to assess his ability and high school academic results for early admission.
When he heard that the Ministry of Education and Training had tightened the early admission process to no more than 20% of the schools' enrollment quota, he was a bit worried. But after carefully studying and understanding the concepts, Tuan Dat felt more secure and continued to focus on reviewing for multiple exams at the same time.
At this time, in addition to regular classes at school, male students also register for extra classes outside to enhance their necessary knowledge and skills.
"The major I chose for university admission is C00 (Literature, History, Geography). As for the competency assessment exam, in addition to the compulsory Math and Literature knowledge, Dat chose the topics of Physics, History, and Geography. That way, I can review for the two exams more effectively at the same time" - Tuan Dat shared and said that his plan is to apply to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung - Vice Principal of M.V. Lomonosov Secondary and High School (Hanoi) - shared that teaching according to the program and reviewing for final year students are being implemented in parallel by the school.
"With the 2018 general education program, the choice of subjects has changed significantly. Students take two compulsory subjects: Math and Literature and two elective subjects from the remaining subjects. This leads to the fact that in one class, the number of students choosing subjects is very different. There are even students who, after tests and surveys, change their choice of admission combinations. Therefore, reviewing is difficult" - Ms. Nhung analyzed.
To ensure the curriculum as well as the exam preparation, the school has monthly tests for students to self-assess their abilities. At the same time, review classes are organized for each elective subject. Review classes are arranged separately, students who register for an elective subject will register for the corresponding review class.
"Since last year, when students were in grade 11, they have been familiar with the test matrix and multiple choice answer methods. Through the survey process, we assessed that students have caught up with the changes" - Ms. Nhung shared.
