Dr. Veena Pai, a nutritionist at Lilavati Hospital Mumbai (India) shows how to identify whether tomato sauce is adulterated or not.
According to Dr. Veena Pai, tomato sauce is commonly used in many households and because of its popularity, it is very easy to adulterate and counterfeit.
Counterfeiting of food products has become quite common nowadays, highlighting the importance of choosing genuine, quality products. With tomato sauce, if it is counterfeit or adulterated, it can contain many ingredients that are not good for the body and can cause various health complications.
Fake ketchup often contains harmful food colorings, synthetic dyes, artificial flavors, preservatives and chemicals, Dr. Veena Pai analyzed.
When consumed regularly, it can pose a number of physical health threats. You may fall ill and experience health problems like indigestion, flatulence, Vietnamese sausagey diarrhea, constipation, dysentery, and food poisoning.
To determine if the tomato sauce you are using is adulterated, add a tablespoon to a cup of water.
“If the ketchup does not turn the water red quickly, it is real ketchup. Fake or adulterated ketchup can turn the water red quickly and dissolve,” explains Dr. Veena Pai.
Make sure you always read the ingredient list on the packaging before purchasing a product. Do not buy tomato paste or any food product of unknown or uncertified origin. Always choose reputable and trustworthy brands.
