In the afternoon of July 30, the entrance to Mr. Vu Van H.'s house (born in 1977, from Van Phuc commune, residing in Vinh Hoa commune, Ninh Giang district, Hai Duong) - one of the 5 workers who died in the mine collapse at Hon Gai Coal Company, Quang Ninh was muddy and slippery after continuous, prolonged rains.
The crowd coming to Mr. H.'s house was growing, everyone was heavy-hearted.
Previously, at around 10:10 PM on July 29, 2024, at the ZH1600/16/24 frame hydraulic support coal face at -110 level, seam 12, part of the Suoi Lai mine expansion project (Phase I), Hon Gai Coal Company - TKV, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh, a group of 5 workers encountered a sudden incident during their work.
The incident resulted in the death of 5 workers, including Mr. Vu Van H. In the afternoon of July 30, Mr. H.'s body was brought home by his family to arrange the funeral according to local customs. The visitation was on July 31, and the burial was on August 1.
Mr. Vu Van H. was a level 5/5 miner, with over 20 years of service at Hon Gai Coal Company. According to the leaders of Vinh Hoa commune, Mr. H.'s family was also in difficult circumstances. He and his wife, along with their two children, lived in a small house in the resettlement area. His wife, Ms. Ha Thi Thu, is pregnant with their third child in the fifth month. Yet, after the accident, Ms. Thu and her children lost their most beloved family member.
To console and share the immense grief and loss of the victims' families, on the afternoon of July 30, a delegation from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor visited and expressed condolences to the family. They also provided financial support of 10 million VND from the Golden Heart Charity Fund to Mr. Vu Van H.'s family.
On the morning of July 30, the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group announced that they would support 20 million VND per deceased person; the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Workers' Union would support 20 million VND per deceased person. Hon Gai Coal Company would handle the procedures according to state regulations, arrange funeral expenses for the workers, and initially support the workers' families with 100 million VND per family.
