“Thirst” for daycare: Workers’ concerns when their children reach school age

MỸ LY |

The National Assembly Delegation of Can Tho City has just had a meeting with voters and officials and union members of the city after the 8th Session of the 15th National Assembly. Accordingly, the issue of building a nursery for workers and laborers is of interest to many union members and officials.

At the meeting with voters, Mr. Dao Chi Nghia - Member of the Party Executive Committee, Deputy Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Can Tho City - reported on the results of the 8th Session of the 15th National Assembly and some new points of the Trade Union Law (amended).

After the report, voters expressed their excitement when the Trade Union Law (amended) was passed, helping the Trade Union organization promote its role of representing and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of workers effectively, bringing great trust and expectations to millions of workers nationwide in general and Can Tho City in particular.

Along with the excitement, union members and officials of the City Trade Union presented many wishes related to access to social housing; handling enterprises that are late in paying and owing social insurance for employees; increasing unemployment benefits; supporting and creating sustainable jobs for unemployed workers... In particular, the construction of daycare centers for children of employees and workers is receiving much attention from union members and officials.

Voter Kieu My Hanh Dung (Can Tho Urban Joint Stock Company's Trade Union) said that the lack of daycare facilities when their children reach school age has forced many workers to send their children to private schools that are both far away and expensive. Faced with this situation, workers, especially those working in industrial parks (IPs) in the area, are expecting the locality and city to pay attention to creating conditions for their children to go to school or have appropriate support policies for low-income workers.

Regarding this issue, the representative of the Can Tho Industrial Park and Export Processing Zone Management Board informed that according to the Planning Development Regulations, the development of industrial parks must have resettlement areas, worker housing, focusing on building works, services, and utilities for workers (nursery, school, medical).

Currently, in Tra Noc Industrial Park 1 and 2, the area for resettlement areas and kindergartens, and construction of cultural and sports union facilities is 3 hectares. Accordingly, 3,567 square meters are for construction of preschool facilities, 2,485 square meters for construction of cultural and sports union facilities. Thot Not Industrial Park has planned about 17 hectares for investment in educational facilities for kindergartens and primary schools.

VSIP Vinh Thanh Industrial Park (phase 1) is currently investing in a resettlement area and kindergartens and primary schools with an area of over 3.5 hectares. With over 14,000 workers, Hung Phu 2B Industrial Park is expected to invest in a kindergarten, which the parent company in Dong Nai is currently planning.

In the coming time, the Management Board of Can Tho Industrial Parks and Export Processing Zones will continue to coordinate with Departments, branches and sectors to monitor and implement these contents to ensure social security, especially for workers in industrial parks.

The representative of the Can Tho City National Assembly Delegation received the voters' opinions; Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Standing Member of the National Assembly's Economic Committee - said that the voters' specific recommendations have been answered relatively fully by the relevant responsible agencies. As for the remaining contents, the delegation will continue to study and give opinions in the upcoming National Assembly session so that the provisions of the Law on Employment (amended) are consistent with the aspirations of workers.
