How to detect secret cameras with just a smartphone

Anh Vũ |

A series of recently discovered cases of installing secret cameras have raised concerns about privacy encroachment in the high-tech era. You can protect yourself from secret cameras with just one phone.

Using a phone camera

stealth cameras often use infrared (IR) lights to capture movement or record in low or dark light conditions. The human eye cannot detect infrared light, but the sensor on the smartphone's camera can see it. This means you can use your smartphone to find secret cameras by finding the infrared light emitted from them.

Step 1: Check the IR feature on your phone

Before looking for a secret camera, you need to check whether the camera on your phone can detect infrared light.

Here's how: turn off your phone's camera and aim at the remote control of your TV or another device.

turn on remote control and observe on the phone screen to see if there is low, stable or flashing light. This light is often purple pink or purple blue.

If you don't see the light through the rear camera, try again with the front camera. If there is low light, your phone's camera can be used to find secret camera footage.

Step 2: Find a secret camera in the room

After determining that the phone's camera can detect infrared light, you can search for hidden cameras:

turn off the lights, close the doors to make the room as dark as possible, this will activate the infrared lights of hidden cameras.

turn on the phone camera and slowly scan the corners and areas of the room as well as suspicious objects.

If you have a hidden camera running at an infrared light, you will see a small light appear on the phone's screen.

Check network connection

If you can't detect secret camera recordings using your phone's camera, you can check the devices that are connected to the local network to find the devices of unknown origin. This can be done through network analysis applications.

There are many network analysis applications that help you search for devices connected to the local network. One of the popular apps is Fing, available for both Android and iOS. Here's how to use this application:

download and install the Fing app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Open the app and allow your Wi-Fi network scanning app.

The app will list all devices that are connected to your network.

Check the list of devices and confirm the devices you recognize. If there is a strange device, it could be a hidden camera connecting to your network.

Using a mobile phone to detect a stolen camera is a convenient and effective method to protect your privacy. You can use your phone's camera to find infrared light from hidden cameras or check your devices connected to your Wi-Fi network using the network analysis application.

If necessary, use a radio frequency detector to ensure there are no illegal monitoring devices in your space.
