OpenAI announced that it will bring voice-based virtual assistant features to mobile devices, allowing users to activate workflows such as document drafting or email summaries.
Plus and Pro package users can use the Work tab on their phone to create documents, compose emails or summarize Slack messages, for example. These subscribers can perform tasks such as building websites, creating presentations, using cloud browsers and accessing other areas such as finance in ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Free and Go package users will work with plugged-in plugins and applications.
OpenAI said that ChatGPT voice conversations will have richer text output. In addition, users can easily switch between text and voice. They can also start a conversation while moving and continue it on a desktop computer.
This feature was launched in the context of more and more users switching to using voice to command AI assistants (artificial intelligence) to perform complex tasks.
In July 2026, OpenAI launched the new GPT-Live conversation model and then the company integrated it with a desktop application, allowing users to use voice to complete tasks in the Work tab or build applications in the Codex tab. This new update brings similar capabilities to mobile applications.
Recently, Anthropic has simplified the transition process between mobile devices and desktops, while merging its Cowork and Chat interfaces. But OpenAI still keeps the Chat tab and workspace separate.
