The changes include a completely new design and artificial intelligence improvements to improve the user experience with the Mail app. The upgrades are expected to roll out in future iOS updates.
Classify
With on-device processing, the Mail app on iOS 18 will categorize your emails into different categories. Personal conversations and time-critical emails will be placed in the Primary category, along with other categories like Transactional, Updates, and Promotional.
Highlight unread emails
In the new Mail app's categories, you'll easily distinguish between new and old emails. New, unread emails float to the top, while old, read emails float to the bottom.
Smart Response
The “Smart Reply” feature is powered by Apple Intelligence, an artificial intelligence engine. When you reply to a new email, using one of the artificial intelligence suggestions on the keyboard, it will create a response to that email, taking into account all the important points in the content. It will also ask you to provide additional information if necessary, so that Apple Intelligence can respond fully and accurately to all the content in the original email.
Writing tools
While this feature is rolling out across the system, not just the Mail app, Apple is making a special point about using “Writing Tools” in the Mail app. With this feature, you can ask Apple Intelligence to help you make your emails sound more friendly, professional, or concise. You can also ask it to generate key points from your text, check for spelling errors, or completely rewrite the content.
Email summary
With Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1, the Mail app will provide a quick summary of each email right in the list view, saving you time and the need to open each email unnecessarily.
Important Message
The new Mail app will also put all your important messages at the top of the list, starting with iOS 18.1. An email is considered important if it's time-sensitive, like an event invitation, flight check-in, or meeting cancellation.
