YouTube has just announced the Super Resolution feature, a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology that automatically upgrades low-quality videos to HD, 4K, and even UHD without the creator having to reload them.
This is one of YouTube's most ambitious efforts to apply AI to improve the global video viewing experience.
According to the official YouTube blog post, this feature works by creating higher-resolution video versions from initially downloaded files below 1080p.
When handled by AI, the video will be labeled super resolved in the settings, allowing viewers to flexibly switch between the upgraded and the original version.
YouTube affirmed that the creator still has full control over the content. The original files and resolution will not be changed, and they can choose not to participate in the AI upgrade program if they want.
"We started with video SD and are looking forward to 4K support in the near future," YouTube said.
In addition to Super Resolution, the platform also introduces a series of new improvements such as a vivid preview mode for smart TVs, searching in each channel, and shopping experience via QR codes displayed directly on videos.
With the super-resolution feature, YouTube joins a group of digital platforms that take advantage of AI to upgrade and revive old content warehouses, helping users have a sharper visual experience without increasing the workload for creators.
