Here are seven foods recommended by reputable health organizations to support thyroid health.

Seaweed

Seaweed is a rich natural source of iodine, a trace element essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), iodine is the most important ingredient in the prevention of goiter and hypothyroidism.

Seaweeds such as nori, kombu and wakame should be consumed in moderation to avoid iodine overload.

Salmon

Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, both of which help reduce inflammation in the body and improve thyroid function. A study published in the Journal of Endocrinology found that vitamin D plays a role in reducing the risk of autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Brazil nuts

Brazil nuts are one of the richest natural sources of selenium, a mineral needed to activate thyroid hormones and protect the organ from oxidative damage.

According to the American Thyroid Association (ATA), eating 1–2 Brazil nuts per day can meet your daily selenium needs and improve thyroid health.

Sugar-free yogurt

Yogurt is a rich source of iodine and probiotics. The probiotics in yogurt not only support gut health, but also improve iodine absorption and reduce the risk of thyroid disorders.

Egg

Eggs, especially the yolks, are high in iodine and selenium. One medium egg provides about 20% of the daily iodine requirement and 16% of the daily selenium requirement. Research in Nutrition Research shows that eggs are a convenient and balanced food to support thyroid function.

Berries

Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and protect thyroid cells from damage. According to research from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, a diet rich in antioxidants can improve thyroid hormone production in patients with hypothyroidism.

Green leafy vegetables

Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and collards are rich in magnesium, a mineral that is important for thyroid hormone synthesis. Research from the National Institute of Nutrition highlights that magnesium not only helps maintain thyroid health but also reduces symptoms of fatigue associated with hypothyroidism.
