What is liver cooling water?
In Vietnam, liver cooling water is often cooked from herbs such as artichokes, gotu kola, paint roots, plantain, texture, ear ginseng... These ingredients are believed to help purify the body, improve urine, support liver function and help sleep better. The cooking method is also simple: rinse the medicinal herb, boil for about 30 - 45 minutes, then strain the water to drink during the day.
However, according to experts, the use of liver coolant should not only rely on word of mouth.
Dr. Deborah Lee - nutritionist at Dr Fox Online Pharmacy (UK) - said: "Some herbs such as artichokes, milk thistle or dockerel root have scientific evidence that they can support liver function, helping the liver recover from damage caused by alcohol or foods high in toxins. But the important thing is to take the right dose and not continue."
Dr. Lee emphasizes that some cool juices may contain strong diuretic ingredients. Drinking too much will cause electrolyte imbalance, affecting kidney function and blood pressure. In particular, people who are taking drugs to treat chronic diseases should consult a doctor before regularly using these drinks.
Do not use it instead of filtered water
A common misconception is to use liver coolant instead of filtered water every day. This not only does not help the liver "feel" more but also makes the body tired, even has metabolic disorders.
The liver doesnt need to coolize you, the liver just needs to not overload, the best thing you can do for the liver is to maintain a healthy diet, get enough sleep, limit alcohol and drink enough filtered water every day, Dr. Lee explained.
So what should you drink in the summer?
If you want to boil herbal water to drink during the day, you should:
Drink in moderation, drinking 1 - 2 glasses per day is enough.
Avoid adding too much sugar or drinking it in cold water.
Do not leave herbal water overnight.
In particular, people with underlying liver and kidney disease need to consult a doctor.
Instead of abusing "clean" water of unknown origin or following the movement, the best liver care is still to eat in moderation, limit greasy foods, drink plenty of filtered water and exercise regularly.
