Lack of medical supplies, risk of outbreak of infectious diseases in Dak Lak

Dak Lak - Remote localities in the area are lacking medical supplies, leading to the risk of outbreaks of infectious diseases.

On April 11, the Dak Lak Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC) said that from the beginning of the year to date, the whole province has recorded nearly 800 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, more than 100 cases of measles and about 600 cases of dengue fever.

Outbreaks have appeared in many areas, both the East and West of the province. It is forecasted that in the context of complicated weather developments, the number of cases of infectious diseases will continue to increase.

At the beginning of April 2026, the Buon Ma Thuot Ward Health Station (Dak Lak province) informed that an outbreak of mumps had just been recorded in the area with 10 suspected students at Tran Van On Elementary School.

Among these, 6 students were found at school with symptoms such as fever, jaw and ear pain.

After the discovery, the school reviewed other classes and recorded 4 more students absent from school due to suspected symptoms of mumps. At the same time, the school has notified parents to take them for examination and treatment. To date, no severe complications have been recorded.

Mr. Hoang Hai Phuc - Director of Dak Lak Provincial CDC - commented: "One of the biggest difficulties today is the shortage of medical equipment and supplies in communes and wards in infectious disease prevention and control. Because grassroots health units have just transferred and arranged, they have not allocated funds to purchase equipment and supplies.

According to Mr. Phuc, the health sector still has enough Chloramine B chemicals to disinfect schools, hospitals and residential areas. However, if the epidemic breaks out, it will be very difficult to control outbreaks, especially in ethnic minority areas.

Faced with the above situation, the provincial health sector has proactively implemented many solutions such as strengthening epidemiological surveillance, zoning and handling outbreaks promptly. At the same time, promote propaganda to raise awareness for people. In addition, coordination with the education sector and local authorities is also focused on controlling epidemics in schools and communities.

However, for epidemic prevention and control to be highly effective, it is very necessary to have support from higher levels in supplementing medical equipment and supplies. At the same time, each citizen needs to raise awareness of disease prevention, proactively get fully vaccinated, and maintain personal hygiene and living environment," Mr. Phuc added.
