According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. BS Bui Thi Nhung (Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Nutrition Association, Head of the Nutrition Department of Sun Hospital), people with diabetes need to limit mooncakes because this is a food that contains a lot of sugar and energy.
1. Control the amount of mooncakes when using
People with diabetes should limit white sugar and ordinary mooncakes because these are foods with high sugar content and energy.
If you want to enjoy it, patients should only eat a very small piece, about 1/8 of the cake and should use it for snacks to avoid abnormal blood sugar fluctuations.
2. Choose the right type of cake
When choosing mooncakes, people with diabetes should pay attention to the nutritional composition and sugar content of the product, instead of just relying on the name or type of filling.
Regardless of which type of cake to choose, patients still need to control their portion size because mooncakes can provide significant amounts of sugar, fat and energy. Cakes with high sugar and fat content need to be considered for their use.
3. Notes for people who have difficulty controlling blood sugar
For people with long-term diabetes or difficult-to-control blood sugar, the use of mooncakes needs to be considered more carefully.
Patients should base on their blood sugar control status and daily diet to adjust the appropriate amount of cakes, instead of just relying on the type of cake. Especially, for people who regularly have high or difficult-to-control blood sugar, limiting sugary foods is even more important.
4. Balance Mid-Autumn cakes in daily diet
If using mooncakes, patients need to calculate the amount of cakes in the total daily diet, and balance with other foods to avoid bringing too much sugar and energy into the body.
In addition to controlling diet, people with diabetes need to maintain blood sugar monitoring and follow doctor's treatment instructions. Long-term blood sugar control is still an important factor, even during special occasions such as Mid-Autumn Festival.
