Children who are abused will suffer serious damage, prolonged psychological pain

In recent days, public opinion has been buzzing with articles about a boy who wrote a "mental letter" about being abused by his stepmother. Expert Vu Thu Huong shared about the above issue.

On September 13, social networks spread an article that was said to be a "call for help" from a boy named H (in Kien Hung ward, Hanoi) who was abused by his stepmother.

In the "letters", the boy is described as having to endure many penalties and strict controls such as: being caught lying on his face, not being allowed to sit in chairs, being banned from wearing blankets, being restricted from eating and sleeping, and being often scolded, scolded, and humiliated. The child also wrote that recently he has been often beaten by his stepmother with hard objects and even a knife.

Along with the post are 3 videos taken from the camera and some diaries, recording the process of living together. In the video, there is a scene where the stepmother batks the boy standing with his face down on the table for a long time, not being allowed to sit.

Sharing with Lao Dong reporter about this issue, Dr. Vu Thu Huong - former lecturer of the Faculty of Primary Education, Hanoi National University of Education - said that in reality, child abuse in the family is common, accounting for the highest rate of all types of violence.

At the same time, such incidents are rarely exposed and often hidden because relatives are the ones responsible for raising and caring for children and are the ones who abuse them, so they will not report them. Children will be pressured because they are their relatives, so they will rarely report.

Regarding the incident of the boy in the "mentals", psychologist Vu Thu Huong said that the first thing to do is to separate the boy from the person who abused the boy. This was done by the child's father as soon as the incident was discovered.

However, the expert expressed regret that the incident occurred after a while, before the father discovered it. Experts say that fathers need to look at themselves to spend more time caring for their children.

The doctor commented that if the father/mother cares about their children more when they live with their stepmother or stepfather, heartbreaking incidents such as abuse will not be able to take place at the "escale" level. Even if the child does not dare to speak up, when being around the child, they can still recognize noticeable signs if the child is a victim of abuse.

"Sometimes people still confuse education with violence. When I held a recent workshop to guide parents, parents asked me to give an example of penalties for primary school children. After I gave a series of examples, did mothers ask me why I mentioned roi vu ngan. In the minds of many parents, beating their children with whip is still an educational measure. This causes children to automatically think like that. Therefore, when children are abused, children sometimes still think that being "beaten" is their fault. Nowadays, education experts have advised parents a lot. I myself strongly object to " skyrocketing" because it is really ineffective, even causing harm to the children", the expert spoke up.

According to Dr. Vu Thu Huong, it is necessary to ensure children a healthy living environment, being beaten and humiliated will cause severe and prolonged psychological damage to children.

Children who are abused in childhood are prone to obsession, depression, and psychological pain throughout their journey to adulthood.

Experts also believe that acts of child abuse need to be handled by the law, that is the price to pay.

However, after the incident, we should not entertain children too much in compensation, asking too many questions sometimes makes children often remember the past rather than forget it to return to normal life.

Regarding the incident, on the evening of September 13, Hanoi City Police said they were urgently verifying and clarifying the incident with signs of child abuse in Kien Hung Ward.

The professional units of the City Police have coordinated with the Kien Hung Ward Police to work with related people to verify and clarify the incident.

Also related to the incident, National Children's Center 111 said that after receiving many reports, the center connected with the Center for Social Work and the Hanoi Children's Support Fund to request verification and at the same time deploy measures to ensure the safety, support and intervention for children according to the provisions of Decree No. 56/2017/ND-CP dated May 9, 2017 of the Government detailing a number of articles of the Law on Children.
