Sister-in-law and Kaleidoscope face off at the box office
"Sister-in-law" is considered the "dark horse" project of the Vietnamese box office at the end of the year. Because currently, the film is still attracting audiences in theaters with stable revenue.
As of noon on December 31, the film had grossed VND75 billion, according to Box Office Vietnam. Of which, the gross on December 31 alone was over VND1 billion.
The film brings together familiar faces such as Viet Huong, Hong Dao, Le Khanh, Dinh Y Nhung, Ngoc Trinh.
The project's success was due to a good promotional strategy, plus the appearance of a familiar cast.
"Sister-in-law" also created a good word-of-mouth effect on social networking sites. Most reviews said that the film's content was close and easy to relate to, and the acting of Hong Dao, Viet Huong, Le Khanh... all left a good impression on viewers.
Currently, the project ranks 2nd at the box office, after the Thai movie "404 Run Now".
The biggest box office failure of the year-end was "Kaleidoscope" by director Vo Thanh Hoa.
The project was adapted from one of the important works that made the brand of writer Nguyen Nhat Anh. However, when released, the film was disappointing. Many viewers criticized the film's script for being forced and the acting of the child stars not being attractive.
During the three-day weekend, the total number of screenings of "Kaleidoscope" did not exceed 1,000, causing the film to not enter the top 5 of Box Office Vietnam, but only be able to stand in sixth place.
Up to now, "Kaleidoscope" has only earned over 4 billion VND. This is truly a disappointing number for a famous director like Vo Thanh Hoa and the Nguyen Nhat Anh story brand. At the current rate, it is likely that the film's revenue will not reach 10 billion VND, which means that the filmmaker is at risk of heavy losses.
Foreign films maintain their form
"404 Run Now" is the Thai film that ranked number 1 at the Vietnamese box office. Although not a blockbuster, the film still received special attention from Vietnamese audiences, especially those who love the horror comedy genre.
According to Box Office Vietnam, the film is currently above the daily revenue of "Sister-in-law" with 1.5 billion VND on December 31 (current total revenue is over 42 billion VND).
Over the past three weekends, the film earned more than 18 billion VND with 211,028 tickets sold in 6,431 screenings.
Foreign films like The Lion King, Sonic the Hedgehog 3... have quite good revenue, bringing in several hundred million VND in a day.
This week (the transition week of 2024 and 2025), there are not many outstanding projects released. The only Vietnamese work released in theaters is "Rain on the Butterfly Wings" - the work that won two awards for Best Film (at Critics' Week) and Most Creative Film at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
On the occasion of the new year 2025, a number of foreign film projects will hit Vietnamese theaters. Notably, "Young buffaloes are no joke" from Thailand.
