Hanbin, a Vietnamese member of the Korean group TEMPEST, officially debuted solo with the single "No Fear" after 4 years of operating with the group. In his debut music product, the male singer born in 1998 not only tried his hand at new musical colors but also brought many familiar images of Vietnam into the MV, emphasizing cultural imprints and personal identity.
The single "No Fear" was released on August 24, including two songs "No Fear (Feat. punchnello)" and "Air". Hanbin participated in writing the lyrics for both songs. The title track has an energetic dance-pop color, conveying the message of overcoming fear, believing in oneself and actively choosing his own path. Meanwhile, "Air" exploits EDM sounds with a liberal and cheerful atmosphere.
This is Hanbin's first solo project since he debuted with TEMPEST in 2022. Previously, the male singer was known through the survival program "I-LAND" in 2020. After joining TEMPEST, he worked as a vocalist and dancer. "No Fear" also marks the first time a member of the group has implemented a solo project.
A noteworthy point in this comeback is Hanbin's way of bringing the image of Vietnamese homeland into K-pop products. The MV "No Fear" features many familiar details to Vietnamese people such as pho, red plastic chairs, stainless steel tables, signs and Vietnamese posters. Costumes inspired by ao dai are transformed in a modern direction, creating highlights for the male singer's image.
The MV's setting is also filmed at a Vietnamese pho restaurant in Seoul (Korea), instead of using a elaborately staged studio. The spaces and everyday objects help the image of the homeland appear naturally, while linking the product with Hanbin's personal story.
Besides the MV, Hanbin also introduced the Korean name Heu'ng Hanbin on his personal page. This name combines the word "Heung", a word that expresses excitement, enthusiasm and positive energy in Korean, with the name Hanbin. This way of calling also evokes the real name Ngo Ngoc Hung, thereby more clearly expressing the personal identity that the male singer pursues in his solo journey.
Hanbin once shared that the time he lived in Vietnam and the years he worked in Korea contributed to shaping his own color. More than 20 years living in Vietnam before coming to Korea helped the male singer have his own cultural foundation, while the process of being a trainee and working with TEMPEST helped him absorb experience in performance, music and K-pop culture. He believes that the combination of these two experiences can become his distinctive feature in the role of a solo artist.
That spirit is also expressed through the message of "No Fear". Hanbin chose the image of an artist who is not limited by fear or existing stereotypes.
In an interview before her debut, Hanbin said she wanted to show her personality more clearly through this product and tried to participate in as many stages as possible in the preparation process.
Before the official single was released, Hanbin performed "No Fear" and "Air" at an event at Everland Korean amusement park, combined with dance cover performances.
After 4 years of working with TEMPEST, "No Fear" opens a new chapter in Hanbin's career. The product shows that the male singer is looking for his own voice, while combining his experience working in Korea with materials associated with his homeland Vietnam.
