Taking on the entire album alone at the age of over 80
The Boys Of Dungeon Lane" is Paul McCartney's first solo project since 2020. At an exclusive audition at the Diamond Dust studio (Los Angeles, USA), Grammy-winning producer Andrew Watt revealed surprising information: Paul McCartney played almost all the instruments in the album himself, from guitar to drums.
However, the most special highlight of the album is the song "Home To Us" – a historic duet when Paul McCartney invited his former teammate Ringo Starr to both play drums and harmonize with each line of the song. The song has a nostalgic melody about difficult childhood in Liverpool (England): "Although the place we live is a bit harsh, it is still home".
The music quality of the album is assessed by experts to be imbued with the classic "Beatle-esque" color with a sudden rhythmic transition structure, combining the vibrant pop dance style in "Ripples In a Pond" (written for his wife, Nancy) and the 70s rock nostalgia in "Never Know". Paul even experimented with the classic studio technique "bouncing down" of the 1960s on Abbey Road's old 4-track Studer recorder to create the minimalist love song "We Two".
Accompanying the former Beatles member in the production role is Andrew Watt, the "music witch" behind The Rolling Stones and Elton John's products.
Reviving memories of The Beatles through songs
In an interview with NME magazine, Paul McCartney affirmed that bringing the image of John Lennon and George Harrison into the album came from the most natural emotions. The album title is inspired by Dungeon Lane near where he and George Harrison used to live in Liverpool (England).
In the song "Days We Left Behind", legend Paul MCartney wrote about his nostalgic early days: "I wrote in the lyrics:'We met on Forthlin Street' and'We wrote a secret code that will never be revealed'. For me, they are simply my close friends who happened to meet and write music together. I don't feel this is a burden, I just hope what I do is proper".
Besides the beautiful memories, the album is also an opportunity for Paul to close the cracked past when the band disbanded in 1970. He expressed his peace of mind that before John Lennon passed away, the two had reconciled in time and John had proactively admitted that Paul was right in his decisions to defend the band. This understanding is the emotional material that helps him breathe life into his new work.
