For more than a decade, the announcement of a celebrity couple's dating news has become a "tradition" every January 1 (New Year's Day) by the famous Korean news agency Dispatch.
From 2013 until now, there have been 9 celebrity couples whose dating news was revealed by Dispatch on the first day of the new year such as Kim Tae Hee - Bi Rain, YoonA - Lee Seung Gi, Jennie - Kai, Hyun Bin - Son Ye Jin, IU - Lee Jong Suk...
But 2025 could be the second consecutive year that Dispatch does not reveal the dating news on January 1. The reason is predicted to be the Jeju Air plane tragedy that just happened, killing 179 people in Korea.
South Korea declared seven days of national mourning starting on December 29 to remember the victims. Korean television stations announced the cancellation of many entertainment programs, music festivals, and year-end award ceremonies.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Dispatch did not announce the dating news because of the late actor Lee Sun Kyun's suicide, which occurred at the end of December 2023.
Previously, many Korean artist couples were expected by the audience to appear on Dispatch's dating news.
The most talked about couples are Kim Soo Hyun - Kim Ji Won (actresses of the movie "Queen of Tears"), Yoo Yeon Seok - Chae Soo Bin (movie "When the phone rings"), Byeon Woo Seok - Kim Hye Yoon (movie "Running with you"), Jung Hae In - Jung So Min (movie "Love Next Door"), Song Kang - Kim Yoo Jung (movie "My Devil Man").
These are all couples who play the main roles in romantic Korean dramas. They are said to have explosive chemistry on screen and have many intimate gestures behind the scenes.
Fans even found many similarities between these couples in their activities outside of acting when acting together.
Currently, Dispatch has not officially announced whether or not to reveal the dating news on January 1, 2025.
