Inadequacies in school-level excellent student exams at Lam Son Specialized School

Xuân Hùng |

Thanh Hoa - Instead of planning and publicizing before the school-level competition to select excellent students, Lam Son Specialized School carried out the "cut first, report later" style.

On September 7-8, 2024, Lam Son High School for the Gifted organized a school-level team selection exam before participating in the provincial-level excellent student exam to select a team to participate in the 2024 National Excellent Student Exam.

Talking to Lao Dong, Ms. Bui Thi Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thanh Hoa province said that according to the regulations of the Department, the target for the school-level team selection exam for Lam Son High School for the Gifted in previous years was 15 students, and for other high schools in the province, it was 5 students.

According to Ms. Thanh, this year, only Lam Son High School for the Gifted will organize the exam for math, which means that the province's math team participating in the national excellent student exam will only be students from this school.

Before organizing the school-level competition to select excellent students, Lam Son High School for the Gifted did not publicly announce its plan to increase the number of enrollment quotas compared to previous years.

However, after organizing the competition, on September 13, 2024, Lam Son High School for the Gifted sent a document proposing to the Department of Education and Training to allow increasing the quota from 15 students to 20. On September 18, 2024, the Department of Education and Training sent a document agreeing with the proposal of Lam Son High School for the Gifted.

Reflecting to Lao Dong Newspaper, parents of students at Lam Son High School for the Gifted were very upset, saying that the way Lam Son High School worked was not in accordance with procedures for an important exam.

Speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son - Principal of Lam Son High School for the Gifted confirmed the above incident and said that the reason the school sent a document requesting an increase in enrollment quota is because this year the school has 2 math classes with 70 students, the school wants to create conditions for many students to have the opportunity to compete, the opportunity to join the team to compete in provincial and national competitions for excellent students.

Sharing the same view, Ms. Bui Thi Thanh - Deputy Director of Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training said that before responding to the proposal of Lam Son High School for the Gifted, the Department held a meeting and considered this a suitable wish to select the best students to participate in the national exam.

However, when asked why the school did not ask for permission and the Department did not agree on the permission before organizing the school-level exam, both Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son and Ms. Bui Thi Thanh could not explain.

According to the report, in the score announcement board of 34 students participating in the math exam, student L.V.A.D received 12.0 points, ranking 22nd in the whole school, but later, this student's score was raised by 1.5 points, rising to 20/20, meaning he was selected for the team while this student did not write a request for appeal.

On October 3, speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son - Principal of Lam Son High School for the Gifted said that he had known about this reflection but was not sure whether the student's family had written a petition for re-examination or not, he would check again.

On the same day, Ms. Bui Thi Thanh - Deputy Director of Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training also said that on the morning of October 3, immediately after receiving the feedback, the department's leaders assigned the Department Inspectorate to investigate and will handle according to regulations if there are any violations.
