Vietnamese students win 4 Silver Medals at the 2026 International Biology Olympiad

4/4 Vietnamese students participating in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in 2026 won silver medals.

Information from the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training, the Vietnamese national team participating in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026 has 4 students participating, as a result, 4/4 students won Silver Medals. The Vietnamese delegation is maintained in the top 8 delegations participating in the exam.

4 students who won Silver Medals at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in 2026 include:

Than Duc Chinh, 12th grade student, Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, Bac Ninh Province;

Nguyen Thanh An, 12th grade student, High School for Gifted Students, University of Vietnam, Hanoi;

Nguyen Luong Thai Duy, 12th grade student, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School, Hanoi City;

Phung Quang Hung, a 12th grade student at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, Bac Ninh province.

With 3/4 of Vietnamese students ranked in the top 7 Silver medals and total points, the Vietnamese delegation continued to maintain in the top 8 delegations participating in the exam.

The 37th International Biology Olympiad was held in Vilnius, the capital of the Republic of Lithuania from July 12 to July 19, 2026 with 86 delegations from 86 countries and territories (including 6 observer delegations) and nearly 300 contestants.

IBO 2026 includes two official exam days: One day of theoretical exam with 2 tests, each 180 minutes and 4 laboratories, each 90 minutes.

The two theoretical exams have 100 topical questions on global practical issues, from environmental pollution, green growth, carbon neutralization, climate change response, to community disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment solutions for some incurable human diseases.

The four practical exam rooms include: (1) Biochemistry and Molecular Biology: On the ability to analyze genes and proteins applied in Biotechnology and Medicine. (2) Human and animal physiology: With key human research capabilities from drug pharmacology, blood diseases and simulation experiments in neurology. (3) Animal anatomy and systematics: Require microsurgery skills, classification, identification, research on pathogenesis of disease-causing insects and climate change forecasting. (4) Plant computer biology: With skills to use calculation tools and computers to analyze crops and agriculture.

The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is often considered the leading comprehensive international science exam at the high school level in the world, requiring comprehensive knowledge of applied mathematics - Physics - Chemistry - Biology - Environment and essential laboratory skills, spanning from the molecular, body to ecosystem and biosphere levels.
