Phap Van - Cau Gie Expressway is a vital route connecting the southern provinces with Hanoi. With its important connectivity, an average of 75,000 vehicles pass through this expressway every day. During the peak of the Tet holiday, the number of vehicles passing through here sometimes reaches nearly 140,000 vehicles/day and night.
The large traffic volume has made the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway a traffic jam "hot spot" for many years . Some traffic jams often occur at the intersections preparing to enter Hanoi and onto Ring Road 3.
To solve the traffic congestion problem at the southern gateway, in July 2023, Hanoi started the investment project to build a road connecting Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway with Ring Road 3.
The project starts at the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway intersection and ends at the Ring Road 3 intersection with a length of 3.4km and a width of 60m (including 6 motor lanes and 2 mixed lanes), with a total investment of 3,200 billion VND.
According to the assessment of the Hanoi People's Committee, the above route plays an important role in solving traffic congestion at the Phap Van - Ring Road 3 intersection.
According to Lao Dong on September 2, after more than a year since the groundbreaking date, the project has only been implemented mainly on the land adjacent to the Phap Van - Cau Gie Expressway and Ring Road 3. The construction scope is narrow, the contractor has encountered many difficulties in carrying out the items.
The majority of the land area stretching over 3km (of which 70% is ponds) has not been handed over to the contractor by the People's Committee of Thanh Tri district and the People's Committee of Hoang Mai district.
This puts the project at risk of falling behind schedule compared to the contractor's commitment to complete it in 2025.
