On many roads and locations, although there are no signs prohibiting parking (sign P.131), these are still default locations where parking is prohibited.
The above content is stated in Clause 4, Article 18 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024.
Accordingly, drivers of vehicles participating in road traffic are not allowed to stop or park at the following 14 locations:
On the left side of a one-way street; On a curve or near the top of a slope where visibility is obstructed; On a bridge, except in cases where traffic authorities permit;
Under overpasses, except in places where stopping and parking are allowed; Parallel in the same direction as another vehicle that is stopping or parking on the road; Less than 20 meters from a car parked in the opposite direction on a narrow street, less than 40 meters on a road with one lane of motor vehicles in one direction;
On the road section for pedestrians to cross the road; At intersections and within 5 meters from the edge of the intersection; Pick-up and drop-off points; In front of the gate and within 5 meters on both sides of the gate of the headquarters of agencies and organizations with roads for vehicles to enter and exit;
Where the road section is only wide enough for one lane of motor vehicles; Within the safety zone of the railway; Obscuring road signs and traffic lights;
On bus lanes, on drainage manholes, telephone and high voltage lines, fire trucks' water intake areas; On the roadway or sidewalks in violation of the law.
Clause 6, Article 18 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety stipulates that: "Drivers of vehicles participating in road traffic may only stop or park their vehicles close to the curb or sidewalk on the right side of the road in the direction of travel; the nearest wheel must not be more than 0.25 meters from the curb or sidewalk and must not cause obstruction or danger to people and vehicles participating in road traffic."
Depending on the location of the illegal parking, the driver may be severely punished by traffic police and public order police according to the provisions of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP.
Accordingly, the fine for stopping or parking at the above locations will range from 600,000 VND to 3 million VND. If stopping or parking on the street causes traffic congestion, the fine will range from 4-6 million VND, and the driver will have 4 points deducted from his/her driving license.
