World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices fluctuated significantly. At the end of yesterday's trading session (August 13), WTI and Brent oil prices decreased by 2.4% and 2.15% respectively.
By this morning's session, both oil commodities continued to decline. At 8:49 am (Vietnam time), WTI oil price was at 80.92 USD/barrel, down 0.33 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.41%. WTI oil price closed the previous trading session at 81.25 USD/barrel, and opened today's session at 81.16 USD/barrel.
Brent oil was at 86.75 USD/barrel, down 0.22 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.25%. Brent oil closed the previous trading session at 86.98 USD/barrel, and opened today's session at 86.99 USD/barrel.
World oil prices fell sharply due to weakening global demand prospects, while US crude oil inventories increased sharply.
According to data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) on August 12, US crude oil inventories recorded the largest weekly increase since January 2023, amid a sharp decrease in oil exports.
In the week ending on August 7, US crude oil inventories increased by 17.4 million barrels, to 424.4 million barrels - the highest level since June 5.
Oil demand prospects also put pressure on the market. In its monthly oil market report, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) lowered its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2026 to 580,000 barrels/day.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) also forecasts that oil consumption demand will decrease by 1.6 million barrels/day this year. According to the IEA, oil demand is affected by higher oil prices and limited supply due to the conflict between the US - Israel and Iran.
Meanwhile, the market continues to monitor risks to supply. On August 13, Saba news agency of the Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen reported that this force used two drones to attack a Saudi Aramco oil refinery in Jizan city, Saudi Arabia.
The attack increased concerns about the risk of supply disruption in the context of the global oil market tightening.
On the same day, August 13 (Washington time), US Vice President JD Vance said that maintaining low oil and gas prices for the American people is Washington's top goal in the conflict with Iran.
Mr. Vance said that oil prices have now decreased significantly compared to the peak in the early days of the conflict. The US Vice President also said that Washington's next goal is to prevent Iran from possessing nuclear weapons.
