World oil prices today
At the end of the trading week, WTI crude oil was at 77.39 USD/barrel last week, down to 74.66 USD/barrel this weekend. Overall, WTI crude oil decreased by 2.73 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 3.5% compared to the previous week.
Brent crude oil was at $80.79/barrel last week, down to $78.50/barrel this weekend. Overall, Brent crude oil fell $2.29/barrel last week, down 2.8% from the previous week.
Thus, world oil prices have ended their four consecutive increases and have simultaneously turned sharply downward.
According to analysts, forecasts of weak demand in China - the world's leading energy consumer - continue to be an important factor weighing on oil prices.
Reuters reported that the US energy group Chevron announced that it had started production at the Tengiz oil field, with a total investment of 48 billion USD. This project is expected to increase global crude oil production by about 1%, adding pressure to OPEC's efforts to cut production in the past few years.
Last week, US President Donald Trump called on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to cut oil prices to pressure Russia’s finances and push for an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Analysts say Trump’s goal could be hampered by the threat of tough US sanctions against Russia and Iran, two of the world’s largest oil producers.
