World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices fluctuated sharply. At the end of yesterday's trading session (July 29), WTI and Brent oil prices increased by 6.56% and 7.91% respectively.
By this morning's session, both oil commodities turned down, at 08:17 (Vietnam time), WTI oil price was at 83.95 USD/barrel, down 0.51 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.60%. WTI oil price closed the previous trading session at 84.46 USD/barrel, and opened today's session at 84.37 USD/barrel.
Brent oil was at 87.50 USD/barrel, down 0.61 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.69%. Brent oil closed the previous trading session at 88.11 USD/barrel, and opened today's session at 88.12 USD/barrel.
The increase in oil prices appeared after the US and Saudi Arabia launched military operations targeting Iranian-backed armed groups in Iraq. Washington and Riyadh accuse these groups of being behind drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabian oil facilities.
The airstrikes took place just hours after the US military announced that the air defense system had intercepted an Iranian surprise attack on US bases in the area. Meanwhile, Iran announced that it had raided 3 oil tankers operating on the "illegal route" in the Strait of Hormuz, and confirmed that it had launched missiles at a US military base in Jordan.
Tensions escalate as Iran and Oman continue to exchange proposals on maritime operation management mechanisms in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran has rejected Oman's proposal to divide the transshipment routes between the two countries equally. Instead, Iran proposed self-managing maritime transport activities in its sovereign strait, while Oman only manages a part, instead of the entire opposite shipping lane.
Earlier the same day, the US military announced that it had successfully intercepted a "sudden ballistic missile attack by Iran" targeting US forces stationed in the Middle East. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), at 5:45 PM on July 28 (Eastern time), the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iranian territory targeting US forces in the region. "All missiles were intercepted," CENTCOM said.
