This year's salt crop, many fishermen expect the output after the Vietnam - Bac Lieu Salt Festival in 2025 to be easier. However, the inherent difficulties of the salt industry are still there.
Mr. Ho Van Nam - a resident of Long Dien Dong, Dong Hai district, Bac Lieu province - said that for this salt crop, his family produces about 1 hectare of rice fields. According to him, this year the weather is very sunny at the beginning of the season and at the end of the season, there is rain, so the harvest is not high.
Mr. Ho Minh Chien - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dong Hai High-Tech Salt Production Cooperative - shared that current salt production still depends a lot on the weather, when there is a big sun, there is a lot of salt, but on the contrary, when there is unseasonal rain, the salt must be re-worked from the beginning.
According to Mr. Chien, in addition to favorable weather factors, salt with high or low yields depends on the application of science and technology in production, especially the mechanization of some stages in harvesting and transporting salt.
However, to apply mechanization in salt harvesting requires salt farmers to produce salt according to the technological model of canvas, the cost of investment canvas each hectare is 700 million VND. The advantage of production in this model is that the productivity is very high, because the salt crystallizes quickly, shortens the harvest time (decreases from 10 days to 7 days compared to traditional salt), so the salt harvest is many times. Not only that, production according to the canvas model, salt quality is also better than traditional production, the price is also high.
Output for salt grains is still difficult
The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Hai district, Bac Lieu province said: The salt production area in 2025 is more than 1,200 hectares, and people's salt has been harvested, with a total salt output of more than 42,000 tons, on average each hectare of people's salt makes a profit of more than 28 million VND.
The reason for the low interest rate of national saltwater is said to be low, an average of only 1,800 VND/kg. With this price, salt farmers will find it difficult to make a profit.
Mr. Ho Minh Chien - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dong Hai High-Tech Salt Production Cooperative - said: Da Nang people have high expectations for the Vietnam - Bac Lieu Salt Festival 2025. However, after this festival, salt prices are still not high. "We hope that businesses will commit to purchasing and exporting salt for investment, so that people can have a better life," Mr. Chien suggested.
In order to preserve and improve the effectiveness of Bac Lieu salt, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) has supported VND 130 billion for the Salt Field upgrade project of Bac Lieu province. The project to upgrade the salt field infrastructure has been completed. Households in the project are invested in electricity, upgraded and dredged irrigation; Improve the efficiency and quality of salt, helping the players apply technology to increase salt productivity. At the same time, calling for investors in the field of salt processing to build a brand of food salt, medicinal salt, travel gifts ...; Building salt display areas, tools, salt production and history of salting industry to connect tourism.
