According to Vietnam Electricity Group, the maximum capacity was recorded at the peak this afternoon, from 13:30 - 14:30. According to NSMO, the main cause is the widespread and severe heat wave that has lasted in the North and Central regions since August 1. In Hanoi alone, temperatures were recorded at nearly 40 degrees Celsius, with sensory temperatures reaching 47 degrees Celsius. The prolonged heat has caused a sudden increase in electricity consumption demand.
In the North, the maximum capacity reached about 28,500MW, an increase of about 3,000MW, equivalent to more than 12% over the same period last year and the highest level since the beginning of 2025. In particular, during the past weekend holidays, the maximum capacity of this area reached 25,761MW, 4,000-5,000MW higher than previous normal days off, this difference is equivalent to 2 times the total capacity of Son La Hydropower Plant (2,400MW).
According to NSMO, during the peak of the evening of August 4, 2025, from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the load in the North may increase to 29,000 - 29,500MW, about 1,000MW higher than the peak time in the afternoon, continuing to put great pressure on the operation of the power system.
In this situation, NSMO has proactively mobilized maximum available power sources in the North, while implementing changes in connections, adjusting power and voltage flows according to technical requirements, closely coordinating with units in EVN and the transmission and generation system to ensure safe and continuous power supply.
NSMO recommends that customers use electricity economically and efficiently, especially between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. to help reduce pressure on the national power system.
