Small traders display goods for 6 hours but still waiting for customers due to flood

Can Tho - Although the prices of goods are constantly fluctuating due to the effects of storms and high tides, traditional markets are still deserted due to sluggish business.

Commodity prices are constantly jumping.

At this time, when going to the market, the amount of food is still the same as usual, but Ms. Nguyen Ha Mi (worker at Tra Noc Industrial Park, Can Tho City) had to pay an additional 35,000 VND because the price of goods increased after storms and high tides.

Talking about the increase in prices of goods, Ms. Mi was not too surprised: "Whenever it rains, the tide is high, but the prices of goods do not increase. 1kg of pork bought 5 days ago for 115,000 VND is now 120,000 VND, vegetables have also increased by 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg".

To save money for her family, these days, Ms. Mi often chooses cheap foods or cuts down on the amount of goods. "Instead of buying pork, I switch to eating fish because the price is better during the flood season. I ask my parents in the countryside to send me vegetables to save money," Ms. Mi said.

At traditional markets in Can Tho City such as Tan An, Xuan Khanh, Ba Bo, etc., prices of food and foodstuffs have increased slightly. According to traders, the reason for the price increase is due to heavy rain and flooding, which disrupted supply, and costs such as transportation, storage, and labor, etc., which have pushed up product prices.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan - a vegetable vendor in Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city - said: "The rain and flooding for several days has reduced the amount of imported goods, and transportation is difficult, food is easily spoiled, so the price of goods has also increased."

Displayed goods for 6 hours and sold 2kg of vegetables.

Although the price of goods has increased, traditional market traders in Can Tho City are still waiting for customers because it is deserted and the number of customers has decreased.

Setting up shop at 5am, Ms. Pham Thi No (a vendor at Tan An market, Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) waited until 11am but was only able to sell 2kg of vegetables due to heavy rain and a decrease in the number of customers coming to the market.

"Normally, I sell out from 5am to 9am. On rainy days, I have to wait 2-3 hours for customers to come to the market. If the vegetables go bad too long, I will lose money. Even if the price increases but there are few customers, I will not make a profit," said Ms. No.

Meanwhile, the seafood and vegetable store of Ms. Pham Thi Bich Tuyen (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) is bustling due to the increased demand for online shopping.

"It rained for several days, the water flooded, orders exploded continuously, there were days when my store delivered nearly 40 orders. Thanks to this online sales, the store was able to save itself from starvation, otherwise it would have been very unsold," said Ms. Tuyen.

To stabilize the market, the People's Committee of Can Tho City previously issued an official dispatch on strengthening price management and control and ensuring the supply of essential goods in the city. Accordingly, the People's Committee of Can Tho City assigned relevant units to promote information work, transparency of price information; closely monitor market price developments, especially essential food and foodstuffs for people, prevent shortages, price speculation, and strictly handle acts of taking advantage of emergencies, incidents, disasters, natural disasters, etc.
