Engine wear and tear when using E10 is equivalent to mineral gasoline

Mr. Nguyen Tran Hung (Hoang Mai ward, Hanoi) has been using a Japanese 7-seat car for nearly 5 years. During that time, Mr. Hung regularly used A95 gasoline and also used biofuel a few times.

"I have also added E5 biofuel a few times, but I don't see many differences in engine performance. In the near future, I think users will not be too surprised to completely switch to E10 gasoline," said Mr. Hung.

At the international conference on "Developing biofuel in the new era - key tasks to create a sustainable fuel future in Vietnam", Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Huu Tuyen - Director of the Center for Research on Dynamic Resources and Self-driving Vehicles (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) announced the results of research over the past 10 years on the effectiveness of E5 and E10 biofuel for automobile and motorbike engines in Vietnam.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Huu Tuyen, from research data, it can be confirmed that E10 biofuel brings many benefits such as: Stabilizing engine power, even slightly improving performance; reducing fuel consumption, saving operating costs; significantly reducing toxic emissions, contributing to environmental protection; not negatively affecting engine durability, except for some old vehicles that need to replace suitable parts.

"Research results show that engine power when using E10 is almost unchanged compared to mineral gasoline. Notably, toxic emissions have decreased sharply: CO decreased by 33%, HC decreased by 18% when running on E10 instead of mineral gasoline.

The vehicle's acceleration capability has also been significantly improved. With the same test vehicle, when using E10, the acceleration time from 0-100 km/h only takes 15.7 seconds, while using mineral gasoline is 19 seconds. This proves that E10 is not only environmentally friendly but also brings a better operating experience" - Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Huu Tuyen emphasized.

According to this expert, when conducting a durable test in long-term operating conditions, the level of engine wear and tear when using E10 is equivalent to mineral gasoline. Important details such as piston, cranes, and valves did not record any unusual deterioration.

E10 gasoline is expected to be used synchronously nationwide from January 1, 2026

According to the representative of a private petroleum retail system in Thai Nguyen: "The ingredients in E10 gasoline are different from traditional gasoline, so I think storage tanks and pumps also need to be adjusted. However, this is not a difficult problem, we will have appropriate preparation".

According to the Vietnam Petroleum Association, many enterprises that have commented on the licensing process from E5 to E10 of the Ministry of Science and Technology are being extended. Therefore, the strong direction and participation of state management agencies will contribute to solving these problems.

According to Dr. Dao Duy Anh - Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion (Ministry of Industry and Trade), it is expected that from January 1, 2026, Vietnam will mandatoryly apply the E10 biofuel mixing ratio nationwide.

According to the representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, this roadmap is specifically regulated and applied to units under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, People's Committees of provinces and cities, as well as organizations and individuals participating in the production, trading, and import of biofuel and biofuel in Vietnam. The exception only applies to Diezel engines, aviation fuels and specialty gasoline for national defense and security purposes managed by the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security.

"After 2030, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is oriented to research and consider the possibility of increasing the blending ratio to E15 or E20, depending on socio-economic development conditions, domestic biofuel production capacity, import and export situations as well as ensuring national energy security" - Dr. Dao Duy Anh informed.
