Social workers - a bridge of love in hospitals

Ho Chi Minh City - To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Vietnam Social Work Day, silent workers are mentioned as a support for patients and their families.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the final-line hospital, where thousands of people enter and exit every day, there are people quietly doing their work with all their dedication and compassionate hearts. They do not directly hold the scalpel, do not stand in the emergency room fighting for life, but are the people who are by the patient's side when they are most confused and worried.

When they need guidance, sharing, or simply a spiritual support, they are always present. Those are the social workers in the hospital.

At Military Hospital 175, the story of patient Tran Nguyen Thanh Tai (33 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) is one of many proofs of the silent but meaningful role of social workers. When admitted to the hospital for treatment, the patient's family was almost economically exhausted. The long days of treatment, increased costs, and accumulated worries made the journey to overcome the disease even more difficult.

In that situation, the social work team of Military Hospital 175 has become a support, supporting the family both spiritually and financially, through connecting philanthropists.

Visits, timely words of encouragement and practical help have helped the patient's family have more faith to continue their treatment journey.

“The day my family members left the intensive care unit, I was really grateful to the doctors and also to the social workers. People regularly visited and encouraged the family, even after being discharged from the hospital and returning home. Those precious money helped us overcome the most difficult period,” patient Tran Nguyen Thanh Tai's family emotionally shared.

According to Major General Assoc. Prof. Dr. TTND Le Quang Tri, Deputy Director of Military Hospital 175, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Vietnam Social Work Day, this is the time to affirm that social work is a professional, noble and necessary profession for social development. "This is also an opportunity for the community to honor the team of social workers and staff, who do silent work but play an important role in solving the problems of individuals, families and the community, especially in the healthcare environment," he shared.

Not only at Military Hospital 175, at Gia Dinh People's Hospital, the social work team has also persistently accompanied patients for nearly a decade. The hospital's Social Work Department has become a bridge of love, supporting thousands of difficult patients, especially vulnerable groups such as abandoned children, homeless people, lonely elderly people... Not only providing material support, they also bring spiritual encouragement, helping patients to be more steadfast in their treatment journey.

Small gifts, meals given directly to the hospital bed, or simply timely greetings,... all have contributed to spreading the warmth of humanity in the hospital environment, which is full of pressure.

BS.CK2 Dinh Huu Hao, Deputy Director of Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said that after nearly a decade of formation and development, the Social Work Department has implemented many meaningful activities such as "Gift Cabinets to share love", "Healthy meals", or 0-dong bus trips to bring patients home safely. These activities not only provide material support but also bring warmth and spiritual encouragement to patients, especially those in difficult circumstances.
