At this seminar, many parents shared their pain and helplessness because their beloved child had psychological and mental problems.
The mother of a female student said that her daughter had difficulty communicating. The girl can chat very frugally on social networks, but in real life, she cannot talk to anyone, and does not dare to greet even when meeting acquaintances. All real-life communication is turned off, with only cyber conversations left. The mother tried many ways to make her child have connections in real life but was unsuccessful.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien - Doctor of Clinical Psychology - commented that when an individual changes their communication model from in-person to online, it is necessary to find out the reason why this person refuses to communicate outside.
Many young people share with Ms. Hien that they are afraid of real communication with eyes and voice, so they just want to text but not call, and meet directly, let alone meet. Most of these cases have a history of interruption in communication in the community.
For example, in the family or at school, they have been judged, criticized for their appearance, voice, or some incident related to communication that has occurred. From there, they want to protect themselves by retreating into the online world, where they feel safer. Gradually, it becomes a habit, they just want to communicate with people who don't know who they are to express their true self.
From a brain-scientific perspective, Ms. Hien analyzed that the hippo area has the function of storing and processing memories in context, helping us identify a familiar situation and link it to past experiences. When an individual has experienced a psychological trauma in the context of communication, the flashpoint will "activate" that memory every time they encounter a similar situation in the present.
This activation sends a signal to the almond gland - the brain's center for processing fearful emotions - causing the body to react as if the threat was real and make the person want to speak but cannot open the mouth, because the nervous system is in a "waybike room" state.
In the specific case of the female student, clinical psychologists advise mothers to find the cause in order to change the communication model.
From the perspective of the lecturer, MSc. Nguyen Duc Tien believes that many students today live a closed life, depending on the virtual world. "Technology can help analyze online behavior to recognize psychological changes, but the most important thing is to detect and support timely," he said.
From the perspective of traditional medicine, Dr. Nguyen Truong Nam commented that mental and physical health are two sides of the same thing. Prolonged stress not only affects the nerves but also causes digestive disorders, insomnia and many other body problems. He quoted famous doctors from the past: " Anger is too harmful, joy is too harmful, sadness is too harmful, fear is too harmful to the kidneys, thinking is too harmful". According to him, the mind and body need to be cared for at the same time, because when the mind is not at ease, the body is also unable to function well.
