By mastering the soft-tube endoscopy technique combined with the Dornier Thulio high-power laser system, doctors from the Department of Urology, Andrology and Gender Medicine - University Medical Center Hospital, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Linh Dam facility) helped a 47-year-old patient (residing in Dong Ngac, Hanoi) have multiple-positioned stones cleaned after just one intervention.
Dr. Vu Ngoc Thang - Head of Urology, Andrology and Gender Medicine Department, University Medical Center Hospital, Linh Dam Facility said: Retrograde endoscopy using a soft endoscope is a method of delivering instruments through the body's natural urinary tract. This is a difficult technique, requiring modern equipment and high skills, and has not yet been widely deployed in many medical facilities.

Previously, many places still applied methods such as percutaneous laparoscopic surgery or peritoneal laparoscopic surgery. However, these methods can cause damage to kidney parenchyma, bleeding or leaving scars.
Meanwhile, the soft endoscope can be flexiblely bent up to 270 degrees, helping doctors access every location in the kidney without skin incisions. Thanks to this, kidney function is maximally preserved, and patients experience less pain.
Notably, the Dornier Thulio laser system integrates two technologies, Thulium and Holmium, allowing the dispersion of ureteral stones, while also treating stones in the kidneys during the same intervention.
Dr. Vu Ngoc Thang added: this combination is becoming a new "gold standard" in kidney stones treatment: no surgical wounds, less pain, fast recovery. Patients can eat and exercise after a few hours and be discharged within 24 hours.
