High risk of rabies
On July 24, Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee said that it has requested departments, branches, and localities to strengthen propaganda and implement measures to prevent and control rabies in the area.
According to information from the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (Ministry of Health), from the beginning of 2026 to now, the rabies situation across the country continues to be complicated.
To date, the whole country has recorded 39 deaths from rabies in 19 provinces and cities. Gia Lai province alone has 2 deaths in humans and 4 cases of dogs suspected of having rabies, which are assessed as belonging to the high-risk group.
According to Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, the risk of rabies arising and spreading is still high due to many reasons, in which the management of dogs and cats in some localities is still loose; the rate of rabies vaccination for livestock has not met the requirements according to regulations.
People need to be aware and understand about preventive treatment
To proactively control and control rabies in animals, reduce the number of human deaths and aim for the goal of no more deaths from rabies, the Provincial People's Committee requests associations, unions and People's Committees of communes and wards to promote propaganda in many forms about the danger level of the disease.
Localities need to disseminate regulations on the management of pet dogs and cats; the responsibility of owners in registering, declaring, keeping in captivity and vaccinating against rabies. At the same time, propagate the act of chaining, wearing muzzles and having someone lead when taking dogs to public places in accordance with regulations.
The Provincial People's Committee also requires people to register and declare the raising of dogs and cats with commune-level authorities and commit to keeping pets in their family premises.
For the health sector, the Department of Health is assigned to direct affiliated units to ensure sufficient sources of rabies vaccine and rabies-resistant serum for treatment.
At the same time, publicize the addresses of vaccination points, strengthen communication, guide people on how to handle initially when bitten or scratched by dogs or cats and go to medical facilities immediately for timely preventive treatment.
