On August 12, 2025, Mr. N.V.C, 54 years old, in Hanoi, was admitted to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in a state of consciousness disorder, with typical cases of increased intracranial pressure syndrome.
The results of the emergency brain CT scan showed that the patient had subarachnoid hemorrhage spreading to both sides - a typical sign of cerebral aneurysm rupture. The blood vessel formation determined that there were two aneurysms, in which the first pair of aneurysms was broken, the remaining brain pocket was small.
A cerebral aneurysm rupture is an emergency nightmare. Just a few hours later, the risk of death is very high" - Dr. Nguyen Quang Thanh, Neurology - Encephalitis specialist, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases emphasized.
In critical condition, the surgical team urgently performed a closed-educated aneurysm surgery. This is a complex technique that requires doctors to accurately access brain blood vessels and clip them in the correct location to prevent bleeding, while preserving the surrounding nerves and blood vessels to the maximum.
Although this technique has only been deployed at the hospital since the beginning of the year, our team has completely mastered and successfully handled this complex case Dr. Thanh shared.
After only 2 days, the patient was conscious, able to communicate, withdrew the ventilator and recovered well.
According to Dr. Thanh, cerebral aneurysm is a condition in which the walls of the vessels expand abnormally, often without symptoms until they rupture. When it bursts, the patient can suddenly have a severe headache such as "hammer", stiff neck, vomiting, disturbances of consciousness, and even coma. Many cases were only discovered accidentally during MRI or cerebral coronary examination.
The risk is often high in people with a family history of aneurysm, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, drinking a lot of alcohol or underlying diseases that weak the vessel walls. The larger the aneurysm bag, the more likely it is to break, but even a small bag can have serious consequences like the case of patient C.
Doctor Thanh recommends: People should have regular health check-ups to detect risk factors early. In particular, groups with a family history or underlying diseases need to be consulted by a specialist and prescribed for cerebral vascular screening.
When warning signs such as sudden severe headaches, stiff neck, vomiting, and disturbances of consciousness appear, you should immediately go to a hospital with a neurologist - craniologist for timely diagnosis and treatment. An unspecified cerebral artery aneurysm is like carrying a slow- detonating bomb in its head. Regular screening is the only way to detect and handle it before it breaks Dr. Thanh emphasized.
