Cancer relapses after 10 years, patient revives thanks to robot

After 10 years of stable treatment, a patient with cervical cancer suddenly relapsed but was saved thanks to modern robot surgery.

In 2015, patient Tran Thi Ph (47 years old) was diagnosed with stage IV cervical cancer, accompanied by many bone and lymph node metastatic sites, with a very cautious prognosis. At the time of admission, the patient was exhausted, had to be in a wheelchair, and her spirit was almost collapsed. After a multi-specialized consultation, doctors prescribed chemotherapy with an etoposide combination regimen with cisplatin. After 6 treatment cycles, the patient responded completely, her health improved significantly and remained stable for nearly a decade.

However, by November 2025, through periodic re-examination, the patient was diagnosed with suspected lesions in the cervix and recurrence was determined on the spot. Unlike the first time, the patient remained calm and continued to trust treatment.

Faced with this situation, doctors developed a protocol in the direction of personalization, combining comprehensive assessment using modern means such as MRI, PET/CT and multi-specialized consultation. After 3 cycles of chemotherapy, the lesions shrank and there was still a localized small mass.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Binh - Deputy Professional Director of K Hospital - said that based on that, the team decided to perform robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery. The hysterectomy combined with pelvic lymph node dissection was successfully performed. The results showed that the remaining tumor was small, no lymph node metastasis was detected, and all cut areas were negative. The patient recovered quickly, and was discharged from the hospital in stable condition after only 1 week.

According to experts, robot surgery helps improve accuracy, reduce invasion, preserve function and shorten recovery time. This case not only shows the effectiveness of multimodal treatment but also affirms the role of modern technology in cancer treatment.

The patient's 10-year journey is proof of the effectiveness of sustainable treatment and the importance of periodic monitoring, early detection of recurrence for timely intervention.
