On August 27, a working delegation led by Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thien - Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee - surveyed durian farming models applying Cadmium heavy metal control solutions in Ngu Hiep and Long Tien communes. In Ngu Hiep commune, the delegation surveyed the model "Durian farming controlling Cadmium heavy metals meets export standards" in Mr. Nguyen Huu Loc's garden, Hoa Hao hamlet.
The model is implemented by the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection in coordination with the Economic Department, Ngu Hiep Commune Public Service Supply Center and Southern Fertilizer Joint Stock Company (April 2025 - December 2026) on 18 Dona Durian varieties 12-18 years old and 17 control trees cultivated according to farmers' habits. According to the implementing unit, although the weather caused the third shoot to develop slower than expected, the model still ensures progress. Currently, the durian garden is flowering and growing well.
In Long Tien commune, the delegation surveyed the model "Application of solutions to overcome durian growing areas contaminated with heavy metal Cadmium" in Mr. Tran The Bay's garden. The model was implemented by the Southern Fruit Tree Institute in coordination with Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, Thien Tam Agricultural Products Trading Co., Ltd. and Mai Anh Dong Thap One Member Co., Ltd. (December 2025 - November 2026) on 20 durian trees, with comparison arrangements to compare with traditional farming methods.
Solutions include intensive and integrated durian cultivation processes for the Southern provinces, using fertilizers that do not contain or have very low Cadimium content, combining biological products and activated carbon (Biochar). Up to now, the application of organic fertilizers, treatment of biological products, use of activated carbon and periodic sampling and analysis have been fully and on schedule.
Through surveys, Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thien noted the coordination between specialized agencies, businesses and farmers. He requested the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection to continue to coordinate with localities, businesses and garden owners to monitor the progress and evaluate the effectiveness of Cadmium control solutions. Mr. Thien noted that people need to proactively protect planting areas, invest in equipment or coordinate to take representative samples for periodic inspection. The Agriculture sector needs to provide specific guidance on the time, method of sampling and monitoring indicators, thereby controlling Cadmium from the beginning, improving the quality of durian to meet export requirements.
Proactively controlling Cadmium right from the growing area is not only a technical requirement in each garden but also contributes to ensuring the quality and reputation of Dong Thap durian, limiting the risk of being affected when import markets tighten food safety standards.
