Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee has just organized a conference to orient the deployment of forest carbon in the province on the afternoon of June 19.
Mr. Do Tam Hien - Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee and Dr. Tran Lam Dong - Deputy Director of Vietnam Academy of Forest Sciences co-chaired the conference.
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Do Tam Hien said that Quang Ngai has great potential to develop forest carbon with about 881 thousand hectares of forest, including 659 thousand hectares of natural forest and 222 thousand hectares of planted forest.
This is an important resource, not only contributing to the implementation of emission reduction goals but also creating new revenue sources, contributing to GRDP growth and improving the lives of forest workers.
According to the assessment of the Vietnam Academy of Forest Sciences, Quang Ngai province has great potential for forest carbon development through activities such as protecting natural forests; limiting forest loss and degradation; restoring and enriching poor forests; improving the quality of planted forests; converting small timber forests into large timber forests; extending the business cycle of planted forests; sustainable forest management; scattered tree development and agro-forestry combined models.
The deployment of forest carbon in Quang Ngai province needs to be carried out in a cautious direction, with a roadmap, based on reliable data and associated with the goal of sustainable forest management.
Concluding the conference, Mr. Do Tam Hien emphasized that forest carbon development is a potential direction, contributing to the implementation of green growth goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving forest economic value. At the same time, he assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to be the focal point in coordinating with the Vietnam Academy of Forest Sciences to implement it.
He requested departments, branches, and localities to urgently assess the potential; review, standardize and integrate forest databases; clearly assign responsibilities in the implementation process; and select eligible areas to build pilot projects.
Mr. Do Tam Hien also proposed that the Vietnam Academy of Forest Sciences continue to support the province in terms of methodology, techniques and human resource training. The province's immediate task is not to sell carbon credits immediately, but to prepare a foundation in management, data, organization and technology to be able to develop quality forest carbon projects in the coming years.
