Western students turn water hyacinth into medical bandages

PHƯƠNG LY |

Tra Vinh - Through the process of research and implementation, a group of students from Tra Vinh University have successfully "turned" water hyacinth into biological medical bandages.

This unique idea called "Lucbinhgauze - biological bandage from water hyacinth" was made by a group of 5 students from Tra Vinh University.

Sharing with Lao Dong, Nhu Quynh said that taking advantage of available resources from water hyacinth will contribute to solving the problem of water flow congestion and water pollution in the Mekong Delta; providing safe medical products with natural antibacterial properties, in line with the green consumption trend.

By combining water hyacinth - the main ingredient and additional excipients, this type of bandage has the effect of absorbing fluid, creating gel, moisture, protecting and healing wounds effectively.

Participating in the contest "Students with innovative startup ideas in 2024" organized by Nguyen Tat Thanh University, the idea "Lucbinhgauze - biological bandage from water hyacinth" by Nhu Quynh's group won the second prize.

Notably, in the "Green Startup Ideas/Projects - Sustainable Development 2024" competition, the group's idea has entered the final round and is preparing to compete next November.

“This is not only a recognition of the team’s efforts but also shows the significance of the project to the community. Using water hyacinth to create bio-bandages gives me the belief that small initiatives can contribute to solving big problems. The positive reception is a great motivation for me and my team to continue perfecting the product,” Nhu Quynh proudly said.

Currently, Nhu Quynh's team is remaking the sample product, finding solutions to some problems and perfecting other content after receiving feedback from the Jury in the semi-final round.

“I hope that the idea of LucbinhGauze will inspire other young people to innovate based on indigenous resources. In the future, the group will focus on more in-depth research to improve production capacity, especially the technology of spinning and weaving into gauze. I also hope to expand cooperation with partners so that the product can go further, meet the actual needs of the market and aim for commercialization,” Nhu Quynh expressed.

According to Master Nguyen Van Vu An - Director of Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Tra Vinh University), the idea of Nhu Quynh's group is quite creative, solving practical problems of society, especially about water hyacinth.

"You are determined to carry out the project and have a sample product. Hopefully in the near future, you can develop and commercialize this product," said Master Nguyen Van Vu An.
