Clause 3, Article 4 of Decree No. 185/2026/ND-CP stipulating the organization and operation of villages and residential groups and regimes and policies for non-specialized personnel in villages and residential groups (effective from May 26, 2026) stipulates as follows:
The term of office of the Village Head and Neighborhood Group Leader is 5 years.
In case it is necessary to ensure consistency with the time of reorganizing villages and residential groups or due to force majeure situations such as natural disasters and epidemics that cannot organize elections on time, the Commune-level People's Committee decides to shorten or extend the term of office of the Village Head and Residential Group Leader but not more than 6 months. In case it is necessary to shorten or extend for more than 6 months, the Commune-level People's Committee shall report to the Provincial-level People's Committee for consideration and decision.
Thus, from May 26, 2026, the term of office of the Village Head is 5 years and may be extended but not exceeding 6 months in some cases according to the above regulations.
