On April 5, the People's Committee of Nam Gianh commune, Quang Tri province confirmed that a 6th grade student in the area had just died from drowning.
According to initial information, at about 5 pm on April 4, N.T. L (6th grade student, Quang Hoa Secondary School) and a group of friends in Thanh Tan village, Nam Gianh commune invited each other to the Hoa Son area, Quang Son commune (old) to take photos.
While standing on the riverbank, L unfortunately slipped and fell into the water. Although people discovered and organized rescue, the victim did not survive.
Also on April 4, at about 2 pm, a group of students invited each other to the Thai River lake area, Phu Trach commune, Quang Tri province to swim. During playing, T.M. Q (born 2012, residing in Phu Loc 4 village, 8th grade student, Quang Phu Secondary School) unfortunately slipped and drowned.
It is known that Q is the eldest child in a family of 4 siblings, in difficult circumstances; her father is being treated for a serious illness at Hue Central Hospital.
Previously, on the afternoon of April 3, N.T. N (9th grade student, Loc Thuy Secondary School) and a group of friends went to Kien Giang River, Le Thuy commune to swim. While swimming, she unfortunately drowned. The victim's body was found by functional forces later.
Recently, drowning incidents related to students have continuously occurred in Quang Tri province, especially in the hot early summer days.
The common points of all cases are that they occur in river and lake areas, where there is a potential risk of unsafety, while children lack prevention skills and do not have adult supervision.
According to recommendations from functional sectors, families need to strengthen management and monitoring of their children, especially during school breaks, weekends or when prolonged hot weather.
Absolutely do not let children arbitrarily bathe in ponds, lakes, rivers, streams; at the same time, it is necessary to equip themselves with drowning prevention and control skills, and situations handling skills when encountering danger.
In addition, local authorities need to review and install warning signs in dangerous areas; organize propaganda and disseminate knowledge about drowning prevention and control in schools and communities.
Reality shows that in just a short time at the beginning of summer, many tragic drowning incidents have occurred, leaving great pain for families and society.
Raising awareness, strengthening supervision and equipping children with skills is considered an urgent solution to minimize unfortunate accidents that may continue to occur.
