Smells bad, pollutes the surrounding environment
For many months now, people living in the area around Khanh Son landfill have reported the stench from the landfill radiating into the residential area.
“Khanh Son landfill, Lien Chieu district is currently causing serious environmental pollution, greatly affecting the health and lives of people in the area. We recommend that the city pay attention and soon invest in a garbage treatment plant with advanced technology, at the same time consider upgrading and renovating existing construction items and re-planning this landfill area so that people can use it. People can live with peace of mind," Mr. Huynh Su, a resident of Lien Chieu district, proposed.
In addition, people in group 70, Hoa Khanh Nam ward, Lien Chieu district, Da Nang city have to endure black water leaking from the Khanh Son landfill flowing through the residential area.
Ms. Le Thi Van decided to leave her house in group 70, Hoa Khanh Nam ward, Lien Chieu district to rent another place to live because she was worried about the health of her family members.
"We have been here for 7 years, from 2017 until now, but because the canal near our house discharges black water, we are very worried about the health of the elderly and children," said Ms. Le Thi Van.
Technological innovation
Responding to voters' opinions reporting the results of the 7th Session of the 15th National Assembly, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment said that in 2019, the People's Committee of Da Nang City approved the investment in the Project to upgrade and renovate a number of items at Khanh Son landfill with the goal of increasing the solid waste receiving capacity of landfill cells 1-5 and investing in new landfill cell No. 6 to treat domestic solid waste (CTRSH).
Urban Environment Joint Stock Company has increased the frequency of spraying products from 4 times to 6 times, changed the method of spraying equipment compared to before, increased the spraying time frame at night, and performed regular soil mulching. Ensure the thickness and level of compaction of the soil layer, and use a narrow dumping area to reduce odor dispersion.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has also issued procedures to monitor the quality of treatment work, organize ambient air environmental monitoring sessions to evaluate and control regional environmental quality, and complete the work. Covering landfill cells with tarpaulin to minimize odors and leachate generated at Khanh Son landfill. Thereby, the odor at Khanh Son landfill is well controlled.
By 2021, the city will put into operation the phase 2 leachate treatment system with a capacity of 1,050 m3/day and night, bringing the total capacity of the two leachate treatment systems at Khanh Son landfill to 1,750 m3/day. m3/day and night, ensuring collection and treatment of leachate of Khanh Son solid waste treatment complex.
All generated leachate has been collected and treated to meet standards before being discharged into the environment.
In 2023, the People's Council of Da Nang City has approved the investment policy of the Project to upgrade and renovate a number of items at Khanh Son landfill - phase 2 (compartment 7) with the goal of creating a backup area to Ensure hygienic burial of non-hazardous solid waste in adverse situations.
In addition, the city is also calling for investment to innovate waste treatment technology (gradually replacing sanitary landfill technology) such as a waste treatment plant with a capacity of 650 tons/day and night. MSW management capacity of 1,000 tons/day and night. After these two plants come into operation, they will basically ensure the treatment of the entire amount of waste in the city.
At the same time, the city is also calling for investment in projects such as a multi-purpose waste treatment plant, a plant to treat leftover food, organic waste, sludge, new investment in hazardous waste incinerators, Overall ash and slag burial area to complete the infrastructure of Khanh Son solid waste treatment complex.
