Black water from pig farm discharged into the environment
Khe Rao Truong in Vinh Ha commune used to be clear, but recently the water has changed color, has a foul smell and dead fish.
Ms. Vo Thi Thuy Na (residing in Rao Truong village) said that on the morning of December 30, 2024, she discovered that the stream water had changed color and had a foul smell, so she used her phone to record a video. After that, she reported it to the village and commune leaders, requesting clarification of the cause for handling.
According to Mr. Cao Van Huong, a resident of the same village, on the afternoon of December 29, 2024, the water source in Rao Truong stream was still clear, but the next morning it changed color. When Mr. Huong and the village chief went to check, they discovered that the water source from two pig farms upstream was black and smelly flowing into the stream.
According to Mr. Huong, the situation of two pig farms upstream discharging wastewater into Rao Truong stream has happened many times. In April 2024, fish in the stream also died because the farm discharged wastewater and the authorities imposed a fine of nearly 150 million VND.
“Not only is dirty water discharged into Rao Truong stream, but during the rainy season, the well water of the local people here is also contaminated and unusable. During the dry season, when the wind blows, the strong stench flies straight into the house, making it unbearable,” Mr. Huong said indignantly.
Continued violations will propose to stop pig farm operations
According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Tri province, after receiving feedback from the people, the unit coordinated with the Quang Tri Provincial Police and functional agencies, local authorities to set up an inspection team, collect water samples for testing.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thao - Chairman of Vinh Ha Commune People's Committee said that in the upstream area of Rao Truong stream, there is Mr. Pham Ngoc Loi's pig farm and Ms. Pham Thi Thong's pig farm, currently raising about 20,000 pigs.
During its operation, the pig farm caused pollution and was fined and suspended for a period of time.
"The authorities have taken samples of the water discharged into the environment for testing. If it exceeds the permitted standards, we will report to the district and province to stop the operation of the two pig farms," Mr. Thao informed.
