Former President Yoon Suk Yeol is being held at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, south of the South Korean capital, after the court issued an arrest warrant for him on the morning of July 10 on charges related to the proposal to impose martial law.
The charges that led to the arrest of Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol include violating the law by summoning only a few cabinet members to attend a meeting held before he issued a decree imposing martial law on December 3, 2024.
This is the second time Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested. He was first arrested in January this year and released in March after the court overturned the arrest warrant.
The arrest of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol led to him not being able to attend the 10th trial for rebellion on July 10.
Yoon Suk Yeol's lawyers submitted a written complaint to the Seoul Central District Court shortly before the trial was scheduled to begin.
The trial will only be attended by Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol's lawyer. Two former military officials have been summoned to testify to details of the martial law plan.
The court is considering the accusation that former President Yoon Suk Yeol led a rebellion and abused power through efforts to impose martial law.
If found guilty of rebellion, former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol could face a maximum sentence of life in prison or the death penalty.
